Fun Things to do in the Summer

Looking for ways to keep your kids entertained and away from the television screens? We’ve compiled a list of fun things we love to do in the summer with our kids to inspire you! 

Water Options: It's a hot day and you want to cool off

  • Splash Pads

  • Pool hopping with friends (hop around the neighborhood or personal pools)

  • Water gun fights or sprinklers in backyard

  • Water parks

  • Visit your friends lake houses or rent a boat or jet skis

  • Water balloon fight

Backyard Options: Want to get out of the house but do not want to go anywhere

  • Backyard movie night

  • Bubble guns 

  • Outdoor play kitchen

  • Chalk

  • Butterfly nets

  • Bow & arrow

  • Paint brushes and waterproof paint and let them paint the outdoor plastic toys 

Free Outing Options: When you are on a budget

  • Playgrounds

  • Walking on outdoor paths (like the monon)

  • Biking or scootering around the neighborhood

  • Summer concert series 

  • Library visits (story time) 

  • Nature scavenger hunt at park

  • Family dinner made together (tacos, pizza, pasta) 

Food Options: When food is life

  • Ice cream or frozen ice dates

  • Strawberry/Raspberry/Blueberry picking at a local farm

  • Farmers Market trips

  • Eat at restaurants that have outside seating and games for kids

Outing Options Costs: Special opportunities 

  • Drive in movie theater (late night) 

  • Matinee movies on weekdays (cheaper prices) 

  • Tuesday & Wednesday best days to go to the Zoo in the summer

  • Day trip to different city for their zoo, parks, or festivals 

What to keep in the car: Things in our car that would make your summer easier

  • Suntan lotion & bug spray

  • Hat & sunglasses

  • Light blankets

  • Towel (for water parks) 

  • Picnic blanket (concerts, lunch out, etc) 

  • Spray bottle with water 

  • Change of clothes or swim suits

  • Stroller fan

  • Summer concerts at 7pm (all over Hamilton County) 

  • Beef & Boards theatre (Indy) *summer play is kid friendly

  • Cornerstone Lutheran Indoor Play Area (Fishers) *1st & 3rd Friday Storytime

  • Friday Food Trucks at 11am to 1pm at Federal Commons (Noblesville)

  • Grab a drink from Java House or food from Sun King (Carmel)

    • They also usually have movies playing at 12pm and 6pm on specific days during the week
